Eugene, Oregon-based Moonshadow Mobile, Inc. took home the biggest investment of more than $400,000 at the 2015 Willamette Angel Conference presented by the Corvallis Chamber of Commerce, Corvallis Benton County Economic Development Office, and the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce on May 15th.

The final amount will be tallied later, but it is expected to be the largest investment that the group has funded to date, said Dave Hauser, president of the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce, one of the founders/partners in the conference. “Often once the company is determined, some WAC investors buy additional shares,” he said. Ethnicity in the US in 3D

By |March 27th, 2015|

Ethnic groups in the US are distributed unevenly across the nation. The animations below show where they are located and how large they are in relationship to each other.  We looked at five different broad ethnic groups: Europeans, East & South Asians, Hispanic and Portuguese and African American.  The ‘Other’ group includes all other groups including Native Americans.  We used the registered voter data from L2 Political to do this ethnic analysis.

Population Data as 3D Organic Structures

By |January 18th, 2015|

Here’s a thing that has intrigued me for years: wouldn’t it be cool if we could convert our population databases with hundreds of millions of records into 3D models and fly through them.

Over the last few months we – finally – developed the technology to convert big databases into 3D models in a matter of seconds. After the model has been converted you can ‘fly’ through it in real time. We are using OpenStreetMaps for the underlying maps. This blog posting is the first time we are publishing images from the 3D models. I choose some of the more artistic […]

Moonshadow Featured in The Economist

By |December 5th, 2014|

Moonshadow’s Eimar Boesjes (COO/CTO) was a featured speaker at last month’s VISUALIZED.io conference in London, presenting examples of Moonshadow’s latest big data visualizations. Kenneth Cukier, Data Editor for The Economist, was in attendance and penned an online article using one of Moonshadow’s visualizations (shown above) as a featured image.

Cukier’s article identifies an interesting trend about how data visualization is changing to encompass online interactive data that is alive, relegating static data visualizations as less relevant relics of the past. This evolution has been accelerated by the ubiquity of computers, tablets, smartphones and Internet-connected digital devices. It’s an interesting read at The Economist titled […]

Ground Game® for the Incident Command System

By |November 19th, 2014|

Geologists estimate that the Pacific Northwest Coast has a 37% chance to be struck within the next 50 years by one of the most devastating earthquakes ever recorded. The question is not a matter of if this will happen but when, and whether or not we will be adequately prepared for it. Unfortunately there is no way for us to predict the precise timing of a natural disaster, however we can take steps to prepare and put systems in place to help mitigate the impact. The advent of Web 2.0, mobile devices, and Big Data technologies present a unique opportunity to prepare for and respond to these events.
